Philippines to Import Myanmar Rice

Representatives of the Governments of Myanmar and the Philippines will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the export of Myanmar rice in the Philippines.

“We have been trying to export our rice to their country, which is one of the largest rice importers in the world.” We are now approaching the signing of the memorandum of understanding, “said U Ye Min Aung, General Secretary of the Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF).

Negotiations between relevant government departments on both sides complement MRF obligations with the Philippines’ National Food Policy (PNF).

MRF said it is pushing to complete the transaction rice exports to begin deliveries in the period from November to December 2015.

“If we rely only on a market for rice exports, we will face problems in the long term. It is useful to have multiple access to market volatility in a market can be offset by other markets,” said U Ye Min Aung.

China is currently the main destination for Myanmar rice exports with fewer supplies to Japan, Europe, Indonesia and Malaysia. The Philippines is a target as a promising new market.

The Philippines imports about two million tons of rice on average each year.
